HRD Satellite Tracking

The current satellite tracking code in HRD is being rewritten as a standalone program. This will use HRD for radio control just like Digital Master 780.

Available as a technology preview, click here for the beta kits.

  • Nova DDE Support
  • Scheduled Kepler data downloads
  • Integrated web browser
  • Audio announcements
  • Uses HRD for radio control / Doppler correction
  • Google Earth integration - view the planet from inside the satellite you are tracking
  • Everying needed for full control of a remote station
  • Dual radio support

Progress

The AlfaSPID rotator over-travel now works correctly. From the AlfaSPID manual "From the reset position you can rotate counter-clockwise an additional 180 degrees in over-travel, as well 360 degrees clockwise, plus an additional 180 degrees into clockwise over-travel".

So as a satellite goes overhead the rotator can now track correctly without spinning almost a full circle!

Some scientific satellites (especially XMM) from http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/science.txt cause the software to crash. Thanks to Roy van Versendaal PD5RMV for finding this problem.

Tested with the Yaesu FT-847 and it works just fine! Disadvantage of the FT-847 is the limited CAT support but for satellite use it's a terrific radio. Note to Yaesu - please make a new satellite radio!

I'll fix an outstanding bug in the legacy satellite tracking support for the FT-847 after lunch.

To Do

August 28th, 2008

  • Alternate icons when satellite is visible
  • Transverter support
  • Remote DDE server (provides NOVA DDE support on a remote computer) for WISP, F1EHN's tracking software and any opther software that uses a Nova format DDE server
  • More rotator support (WISP DDE already working)
  • Zoom - shading error
  • Rotator
    • Add Stop and Preset positions
    • Don't overload with too many unnecessary commands
  • Google Earth
    • Move into a docking pane
    • Add Zoom
  • Check tuning speed with dual radios (when tuning with tuning bar)
  • Check that the AZ/EL logic works correctly (staggered updates)
  • Add 67Hz tone button for TS-2000
  • Help: how to track a satellite
  • Picture of remote operation with 10m dish (EME)
  • Return status of all buttons and sldiers from HRD in one message
  • Radar plots
  • Rotator support for over-travel. From the AlfaSPID manual "From the reset position you can rotate counter-clockwise an additional 180 degrees in over-travel, as well 360 degrees clockwise, plus an additional 180 degrees into clockwise over-travel".
  • Auto-detect when user is manually tuning the radio.
  • Orbitron DDE support (local only).
  • When using two radios (one for RX, one for TX) lock radios to band rather than RX/TX.
  • FT-847 / TS-2000 check with ISS operation.
  • Add azimuth to elevation passes plots.
  • Passes as text.
